Dr. Padraig Duignan began at the UCVM as a wildlife pathologist in September, 2010. Dr. Duignan completed his veterinary degree at University College, Dublin, Ireland and his PhD in Veterinary Pathology at the University of Guelph, Canada. He worked as a Senior Lecturer (Pathology) at the University of Melbourne, Australia before moving to Canada, last year. Dr. Duignan's research interests include Pathology, immunology and diseases of free-living wildlife with a particular interest in marine mammals, marsupials, bats, birds and fish as well as epidemiology of infectious diseases in wildlife populations in polar and sub-polar regions. He is also interested in studying the impact of climate change on the epidemiology of disease in populations in extreme environments or under ecological and physiological pressure. At present, his research is focused on diseases and parasites of coyotes and wolves in Alberta and the NWT, health of muskoxen on Arctic islands, indices of health and stress in narwhal, toxicological effects of tar sands hydrocarbons on wild birds in Northern Alberta.
