Pathologist in the Western/Northern Regional Centre of CCWHC, and Professor in the Department of Veterinary Pathology, Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon. He was raised on a mixed farm (grain and beef cattle) near Regina, Saskatchewan. His university education included B.S.A. (Fisheries and Wildlife Management, M.Sc. (Ecology), and D.V.M. from the University of Guelph, and Ph.D. (Veterinary Pathology) from the University of Saskatchewan. He is interested in all aspects of disease in free-living species and has published three books on various aspects of the subject: Diseases of Wild Waterfowl, Plenum Press, 2nd ed., 1997; Essentials of Disease in Wild Animals, Blackwell Publishing, 2006; Disease in Wild Animals, Investigation and Management, Springer, 2nd ed., 2007. Research, usually with graduate students, has included disease in birds (botulism, avian cholera, effects of salinity on ducklings, vitamin A deficiency in waterfowl, fleas in nesting geese, lead poisoning, pox in bluejays), ungulates ( tuberculosis and brucellosis in bison, winter mortality of deer, pneumonia in mountain sheep, chronic wasting disease), rodents (tularemia, Tyzzer's disease, bartonellosis), carnivores (Echinococosis , traumatic injuries in wolves), and fish ( heavy metal poisoning, stress). He has a special interest in forensic pathology as a service to wildlife enforcement officers.
